After leaving school I accepted a job as an Apprentice Carpenter and Joiner whilst attending college on a day release scheme. I completed the course and obtained three NVQ awards in three years. I then spent the following three years working for various companies and gained experience working on industrial, commercial, retail and domestic properties.
When I was 21 I applied to work as a volunteer teaching carpentry through VSO (Voluntary Service Overseas). I worked at Ngelani Youth Polytechnic for two years in Kenya. My main responsibilities were to develop students carpentry skills, in order to pass the trade tests, but I also undertook fund raising activities which enabled the dormitory building to be finished and electricity to be installed in the polytechnic.
On my return to the UK, I started my own Carpentry and Joinery Company which mainly focused on domestic extensions and refurbishments. During this time, I extended my own house and studied for the BTEC National Certificate in Construction on a part-time basis.
As a family we chose to re-locate to Yorkshire and I decided to further my construction knowledge by undertaking a BSc in Architectural Technology. I worked in an architects' practice whilst attending university one day a week until starting my own business.
In 2019 I attended a Professsional Assessment Interview at CIAT offices and achieved Chartered Architectural Technologist status MCIAT.
Utilizing all of these qualifications and skills I am now the Managing Director of Michael Carr Building Design and Construction.
